Massage Therapy and Trauma

There are so many aspects to Massage Therapy, but one big aspect is learning how to hold space for people since you get to be with people in their most vulnerable state. No matter what, you and the therapist have to be the person to hold this space, uphold the ethics and boundaries, and make them feel safe because while you're working on them, it can release a variety of traumas, physical, mental, and emotional.

I've had it all on my table and it is an honor to work with anyone going through trauma. Take comfort in knowing that all Massage Therapists are under HIPAA compliance. I legally cannot tell anyone about anyone else's story, their name, or direct references to who they are.

This should be reassuring to some people to know that the things you've said to your therapist are confidential. Massage therapy and being a Massage Therapist with trauma is a fascinating subject. Massage Therapists have been through a lot and we have a moderately risky career.

You and the Therapist are not only holding space for vulnerable people, but you are also in a vulnerable situation with people, mostly strangers, and people can get weird. People can get attached. I've known plenty of Massage Therapists who have dealt with stalkers. I know plenty of Massage Therapists who have been physically attacked during their sessions, including myself.

I don't think anyone provokes them to be attacked during a massage. It's usually the unwellness of the patient. There are a variety of stories I could share and stories that I encourage you and other Message Therapists to comment on.

You're not alone. We've all been through stuff. It sucks sometimes, and it's an honor to be a Massage Therapist and do what we do. Just remember that we're human, and it's okay to feel. It will always be reasonable to say no as the therapist, and as the client we should always value our well being over any money exchange. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. I hope this can always be an open discussion as we better improve our approach as Therapists and clients.
